From patient to model: stereolithographic modeling of the cerebral vasculature based on rotational angiography.

We developed a method to produce tubular in vitro models of the cerebral vessels from real patient data. Three-dimensional data sets obtained from patients undergoing rotational angiography were used for stereolithographic biomodeling by using rapid prototyping technology. In a second step, tubular reproductions of the cerebral vessels were obtained by using the lost-wax technique. These reprod...

Three-dimensional biomodeling in complex mandibular reconstruction and surgical simulation: prospective trial.

BACKGROUND Mandibular reconstruction is challenging for experienced and resident surgeons. Three-dimensional (3D) biomodeling creates accurate physical models of patients' craniofacial skeletons, which can potentially assist reconstruction. However, this capacity has not been objectively examined. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to assess 3D biomodels in performing and learning mandib...

Use of three-dimensional medical modeling methods for precise planning of orthognathic surgery.

Stereolithographic (medical rapid prototyping) biomodeling allows three-dimensional computed tomography to be used to generate solid plastic replicas of anatomic structures. Reports in the literature suggest that such biomodels may have a use in maxillofacial surgery, craniofacial surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, otology, vascular, and nasal research. A prospective trial to assess the useful...
